Obituary

Barbara Jean (Campbell) Northrup was born on April 8, 1933, in Seattle, Washington to parents Edward Hunt Campbell and Ruby Estelle (Conway) Campbell.

As a child, her family lived in North Bend, Oregon, where her father worked in the lumber industry. When she was a young teen, Barbara, her parents and younger sister and brother, moved to Mapleton, Oregon. Her parents built a home next to the Siuslaw River where they would live and build upon for the next 30+ years.

Barbara attended Mapleton School District. She enjoyed playing volleyball and softball, was the Junior class secretary, and was voted Junior class Princess at the school's annual Carnival in March of 1950. She was also in the Honor Society. She was a talented artist and filled pages of sketchbooks with beautiful works of art. After graduating in 1951, she attended Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon, graduating in 1954 with her Nursing credentials.

On August 15th, 1954, she married Quentin Raymond Stewart. They eventually settled in Waldport, Oregon, after welcoming their first two children, Diane and Robin.  Barbara began her nursing career while Quentin worked for the U.S. Forest Service.  In 1961 the family moved to Cle Elum, Washington, where Quentin again found work with the Forest Service. Shortly afterward, they welcomed their twins, Kimberly and Brian.

Barbara and Quentin later divorced. In 1973, she married Charles "Charlie" David Northrup. They were very much in love and devoted to each other's happiness. They were committed to sharing all of life's challenges and blessings.

The family moved to Yakima, Washington, in 1976. Charlie began a position as High School Counselor at Highland High School. Barbara found a nursing position at Memorial Hospital and ended up working there for many years, the last few years working as an IV therapist.

Barbara enjoyed working outside in her yard, cultivating her impressive garden, and canning fruits and vegetables for the family. She was a masterful seamstress with a creative touch. She also had a lifelong passion for reading and loved nothing better than a good book. Together, Barbara and Charlie enjoyed many years of family visits, holidays, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

They loved to go camping in their 5th wheel which they christened "Maud Ann" (after Barbara's beloved Aunt Maud) and later in the Minnie Winnie. Before, and long after they retired, they traveled thousands of miles across the United States, Canada, and Alaska. Barbara marveled at the beautiful world and the memories she and Charlie were making together. They visited family, landmarks, and historical sites. They were best friends who sought adventure together. They photographed, mapped, and journaled their adventures to share with loved ones.

In 2015, Barbara and Charlie moved into an independent living facility in Yakima. For seven years they were happy and content to spend their days together. After a decline in health, Charlie passed away on September 24, 2022, at the age of 88. Barbara spent her final year in a memory care facility in Washington where her health rapidly declined after the loss of her husband. After many meaningful visits with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Barbara passed away peacefully in her sleep during the early morning hours of November 20th, 2023, at the age of 90.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Charles David Northrup and stepchildren Kent A. Northrup, Kerri A. Fix, and Christopher D. Northrup. Barbara is survived by children Diane (Audie) Jones of Haughton, Louisiana, Robin (Greg) Schaecher of Forest Grove, Oregon, Kimberly Stewart of Bellevue, Washington, Brian (Grace) Stewart of Lawton, Oklahoma, and stepdaughter Karen (Steve) Ballentine of Glendive, Montana, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A private family graveside service will be held in the spring, when Barbara will be laid to rest next to the love of her life; our stepdad, dad, grandpa and great grandpa, Charlie. We love and miss you both so very much!
