Nov 26, 1944 — May 25, 2023
Woodland
Deacon David Francis Rapp
November 26, 1944 ~ May 25, 2023
David Rapp was born in San Jose and grew up on the family fruit ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California with his parents, Adolphus and Lorene, and his siblings, Agnes, Leo, and Louis. He also had a brother Arthur who died as an infant. He was called to attend seminary at a young age in 1958. He left the seminary after seven years, opting to attend college. David graduated from San Jose State College with a BA in Sociology and Psychology. During this time he met his wife, Sandi. They were wed in June of 1967. The next month, David entered the US Air Force. During his seven years serving our country, he was stationed in Mississippi, Germany, Arkansas, Guam, and Thailand.
From 1974-1985, David worked in the Semiconductor Industry in Silicon Valley before making the brave leap with Sandi to 'Business Owner.' Together with their family, they moved to Reno, NV and built a successful video and photography business, which they ran for 20 years. During this time, David and Sandi relocated twice: first back to the ranch where David grew up, then to Tacoma, WA.
Once settled in the PNW, David felt God's call again. This time, he felt this call was to partner with our Lord in the care and healing of his brothers and sisters. He earned his MA in Pastoral Studies and post-graduate certificates in Pastoral Leadership and Spiritual Direction from Seattle University. He completed clinical pastoral education and then worked as a Hospital Chaplain in the Franciscan Hospital System in the Tacoma area from 2002 until his retirement in 2015. David was ordained a permanent Deacon in the Archdiocese of Seattle in 2007. He authored a book, Prayers and Thoughts: A Devotional for the Sick and Those Who Care for Them. Through his work as a chaplain and as a Deacon, David fulfilled his calling to serve God and others as a healer and carer.
David was a devoted family man. During his near 56-year marriage, he and Sandi had four children: Lisa, Tim, Christy, and Steven; fourteen grandchildren: Ammanda, Candis, Garrett, Hana, McKayla, Michael, Trace, Bella, Kevin, Kyle, Ethan, Lucas, Liam, and Connor; and three great-grandchildren: Emersyn, Henry, and Violet. A fourth, Kennedy, is expected in July. David's family was always a source of fun, encouragement, and most of all, love for him.
