Fred was born on May 30, 1933, in Ashland, Ohio. After graduating high school in Warren, Ohio, he joined the United States Air Force where he served in a reconnaissance and mission planning organization. After completing his Air Force service, he attended New York University and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Accounting and Finance.
While attending New York University, Fred worked as an accountant at the National Headquarters of the Salvation Army. Also, as an accomplished trombonist, Fred played with the renowned Salvation Army New York Staff Band and performed with the group at many notable venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York and Royal Albert Hall in London. It was during this period that he developed a deep appreciation for the musical arts.
After graduating from college and relocating to the Los Angeles, California area, Fred joined Space Technology Laboratories, a leader in the aerospace and defense industry. The company later became TRW. He remained with TRW for 31 years, retiring in 1994. Subsequent to his retirement, TRW merged with Northrop Grumman Corporation.
His career at TRW was concentrated on finance and administration. During his initial years with the company, he worked in the planning and development of new facilities in the Redondo Beach, CA area. One of his early assignments was administrator at the San Juan Capistrano, CA Rocket Engine Test Facility. This facility tested the TRW developed rocket engine that descended the astronauts to the surface of the moon and later served to rescue the Apollo 13 astronauts and return them to earth.
Fred held several senior management positions at TRW. In 1971, he relocated to Vancouver, WA as Finance and Administrative manager of the Northwest Regional Office of TRW Industrial Operations. Over the years, Fred was Treasurer, Finance and Administration Manager, TRW Subsea Petroleum systems, located in Houston, TX, Business Manager, TRW Ogden Engineering Operations and Director, Financial and Resource Planning, TRW Energy Development Group, located in Redondo Beach, CA. He also participated in special projects relating to new product development and the launching of a new TRW subsidiary company. He felt privileged to work with such an outstanding technical company and held his professional colleagues in high regard.
Fred cherished the 40 years he shared with his loving wife and soul mate, Helen Marie. He shared with her a life of love, devotion, adventure and respect for each other. Her loss in 2014 was devastating to him, but the memories of her joyful spirit, optimism and positive attitude about life allowed him to move forward. He was exceedingly grateful for the love of the family Helen gave him, Taiwa (Mykel) Ulrich, Cathy (Tom) Bloss, Ed (Diane) Mesick, Bob (Amy) Mesick and grandchildren.
Fred is also proceeded in death by his parents, Frederick, Sr and Elizabeth Elliott and brother, Frank Elliott. He is survived by his nephew Mark (Lynn Barger) Elliott and niece Karin Elliott (Bart LoPiccolo). Matt (Hannah) Wint are a special part of Fred's extended family.
As a hobby, Fred was interested in aviation technologies and received his private pilot's certificate in 1962 in Los Angeles, CA. He always strived to be knowledgeable about the latest developments in commercial and military aircraft and systems. He was an avid radio-control airplane pilot and enjoyed building and refining model aircraft. He was a forty-year member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and served as Secretary of the Fern Prairie Modelers since 1995.
Fred considered himself fortunate to live during a period of historical technical achievement and economic development.
