George Joseph
Miller Sr.
Feb 11, 1937 — Aug 24, 2024
Vancouver
George Joseph Miller, Sr. went home to be with God on August 24, 2024, and passed away in the presence of his loving family. George was born on February 11, 1937, at Quincy City Hospital in Quincy, Massachusetts to Vincent and Helen (Breen) Miller.
George attended elementary school at the Benedict Fenwick School and the Quincy School, and high school at North Quincy High School. George spent his youth enjoying many adventures in his neighborhoods of Dorchester and North Quincy. At the age of 16, George enlisted in the U.S. Military. His military service took him to Sampson Air Force Base in New York, Lowry Intelligence School and Air Force Base in Denver, CO, the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center in Saint Louis, MO, and the U.S. Army Language School in Monterey, CA. George shipped out to the Osan Air Force Base in South Korea, and after receiving a shrapnel injury, was hospitalized at Tokyo Army Hospital in Japan. He was then stationed at Sharoi Air Intelligence Base, the 6004th Air Intelligence Service Squadron, and the Tachikawa Air Force Base.
Following his military service, George completed his high school equivalency education at the Newman Preparatory School in Boston. He then joined VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) in 1964 as the 51st volunteer to ever serve his country in this program. He completed his VISTA Training at Northeastern University in Boston. In 1965, George was stationed working in service of the Makah Indian Tribe in Neah Bay, Washington. George then transferred to serve at the Wolf Creek Job Corps Center in Glide, Oregon, where he taught in the education program and provided personal guidance and support to students in the program. Neah Bay and Wolf Creek were George's first impression of the rugged natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and they made a lasting impression on him. In George's second year of VISTA service, he served at the pre-trial release program in San Francisco, California. George returned to the Wolf Creek Job Corps Center for another year of service, before both working and taking classes at Umpqua Community College. George transferred to Portland State University to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in History.
At Portland State University, George met his future bride and Portland local, Jean Laughlin, who was also a student at PSU. George and Jean became engaged in 1973 on a trip home to Boston where Jean met George's family. After their graduation from Portland State University, George and Jean were married in 1974 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon. Together George and Jean raised three beloved children: Elizabeth Ann ("Betsy"), born in 1975, George Jr. ("Joey"), born in 1978, and Mary Margaret, born in 1981. George and Jean settled first in Portland, where George worked in the Juvenile Diversion Program. The Miller family moved to Vancouver, WA in 1977, where George worked as the director of the Work Release Program and the Director of Prosecutorial Services for Clark County, WA. George founded the Victim Witness and Drug Awareness programs in the county. In 1978, George successfully ran for election to the office of Clark County Clerk, and was elected to a second term as County Clerk in 1982. During this time, George also served as president of the State Association of County Clerks and was named Clerk of the Year in the State of Washington in 1985. George became the Chief Executive of Clark County District Court, as well as the head of probation and a magistrate of the courts. He then became the Chief Deputy of Clark County Superior Court. George attended Judicial College at the University of Nevada at Reno to study the Administration of Justice. He was a Graduate Fellow of the Supreme Court with the Institution of Court Management at the University of Colorado Law School and earned a Certificate from the Institute for Court Management in 1986. George served for nearly four decades as an Executive and Magistrate of the Clark County Court system. He was a well-known personality around the Clark County courthouse, an avid volunteer in local organizations and political campaigns, and a devoted coach of his children's sports teams.
After his retirement in 2007, George became the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission for the City of Vancouver, WA. Always a hard worker, George's retirement "hobby" was to secure a new position in Operations with the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Through this position, George met many interesting celebrities and witnessed countless theatrical and music performances.
George was a loyal friend and family member who was beloved by those who knew him. In his later years, George enjoyed meeting for breakfast, lunch, and coffee with his various groups of friends. A larger-than-life figure, he loved family reunions and parties, dining at restaurants and cooking at home, road trips and vacations, and traveling back home to see his family in New England. His annual Thanksgiving buffet was a legendary event. George's sense of humor, storytelling, and ukulele skills were a delight to all. On May 11, 2024, George and Jean celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the presence of their family and friends. George was a reliable and steadfast individual, and his memory will live on forever in the many lives he has touched. George is survived by his wife, Jean, daughter Betsy Frost (David) of Drain, OR, son Joey Miller (Jouliana) of Kamuela, HI, daughter Mary Margaret Miller of Vancouver, WA; step-grandchildren Austin and Lolly Frost; nieces and nephews Jill (Paul) MacMillan, Jeanne (Michael) Casey-Garcia, John (Mary) Casey, Carolyn Cicerone (Karyn Adams), Michelle (Gary) Mullin, Rose Laughlin, Matthew (Debbie) Laughlin, Nora Laughlin, Luke Laughlin, Lindsay Laughlin, Jamie (Darin) Glover, Jennifer Jaya Laughlin, Maureen (Kevin) Reid, Michelle (Philip) Llanos, Mary (Dale) Purkey, and Gary (Tina) Miller; sister-in-law Mary Laughlin of Portland, OR; brothers-in-law William (Margy) of Seattle, WA and Richard (Marilyn) of Portland, OR; and countless cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends. George was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Helen (Breen) Miller, sister Frances (Frank "Bud") Casey, brother Vincent (Ellen) Miller, parents-in-law William and Mary (O'Malley) Laughlin, brother-in-law James (Sharon) Laughlin, and nephews Todd Laughlin and Vincent "Hank" (Evelyn) Miller. George requested that donations in his memory be made to Saint Mary's Academy in Portland, OR (www.stmaryspdx.org/give) and the Boston Fire Department Relief Fund in Boston, MA (www.bfdrelief.org/donate). Saint Mary's Academy is the secondary school that provided the finest education for George's wife and daughters, and the Boston Fire Department Relief Fund works to improve the health and wellness of Boston Firefighters and their families. As the son of a Boston fire captain, the Boston Fire Department was always very close to George's heart.
George's funeral mass will be held at The Madeleine Parish (3123 NE 24th Ave, Portland, OR) on Saturday, September 14 at 10:00 AM, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. A private burial with military honors will take place on Monday, September 16 at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home.
