Hazel Luella Yinger Gibbons passed away at home on September 23, 2021, with her daughter Peny Gibbons by her side. Hazel was born in Oregon City, Oregon on July 20, 1922. She was the fifteenth of seventeen children, and grew up in Vancouver, Washington on her parents' Henry and Christina Yinger's farm, A-1 Dairy.
Hazel married John R. Gibbons on September 27, 1941 and they raised four children. She was a devoted mother and enjoyed supporting her children's activities, especially keeping score at their baseball games. When her boys were school age, Hazel drove the Church school bus to their private one room school.
Hazel lived an active life and enjoyed many hobbies, including bowling, clam digging, trips to casinos, live music and dancing. She was an avid fan of the Seattle Mariners and the Portland Trail Blazers. She enjoyed watching game shows. Hazel supported her community in various ways, including volunteering her time at the local precinct on election days, at the Good Shepherd Thrift Shop as well as events such as the Dinner in White on the Columbia in Washougal with her daughter.
Being raised on a dairy farm, Hazel learned the value of a strong work ethic at an early age. She worked at Del Monte Cannery for 37 years, and later at Northwest Packing.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Gibbons; she is survived by her four children, John C. (Ursula), Camas, WA, Larry (MaryAnne), Lynnwood, WA, Dave (Diane), Mt. Vernon, WA, and Peny Gibbons, Washougal, WA; Eight grandchildren and Fourteen Great Grandchildren; Sister, Lucy Stroman, Sacramento, CA. Sister in-law Margie Yinger, Vancouver WA.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 11005 N.E. Highway 99, Vancouver, WA on Saturday, October 23 at 1 p.m., followed by a reception. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, 2675 Index St., Washougal, WA 98671 (https://wcghs.org)
