Obituary

HELEN MARGARET NELSON
May 2, 1929 ˜ July 20, 2023

On July 20, 2023, Helen Margaret Nelson passed on from this earth at the age of 94. She was born to Clara and Hubert Stuckart on May 2, 1929, in Bird Island, MN. Helen and her family moved to Sublimity, OR, when she was about four. She grew up in Sublimity, attended St Boniface High School and then went on to attend St. Joseph School of Nursing in Vancouver, where she met her future husband, Milton, on a blind date. Milton thought she was the most beautiful woman he had met and believed that until the day he died. They were married in February of 1951 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage together, living in Vancouver, WA, all their married life.

Helen spent most of her nursing career working in the hospital first at the original St. Joseph's and then later at Southwest Washington Medical Center. In the latter part of her career, she was an excellent head nurse in the orthopedic department. Anyone under Helen's care, knew they were in competent and caring hands. She retired in 1984 after 30 years of nursing.

Helen and Milton were members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for nearly 60 years. Helen was active there, efficiently helping organize the senior and funeral luncheons. Together Helen and Milton cherished family time and treasured their many Seaside vacations with their five children, grandkids and great-grandkids and enjoyed their many holiday gatherings through the years. Helen was known for her yummy pies and the fancy, decorated cakes she made for all the grandkids' birthdays. Her grandchildren enjoyed baking under her guiding hand.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton; son, John; and nine siblings. She is survived by her children, Barb Jutila (Dale), Marilyn Nelson, Kathleen Baxter (Terry) and Robert Nelson (Afton); eight grandchildren, Heather St Hilaire, Erik Jutila, Senia Lee, Stacey Smith, Natalie Tapfer, Ethan, Jonah and Isaac Nelson; and nine great-grandchildren, Hannah, Gemma, Gretchen, Ava, Olin, Tova, Rylan, Evy and Josie. Helen has one surviving brother, Ted Stuckart. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen's family is grateful for the care Park Side Adult Family Home provided in her last years and for the kindness PeaceHealth Hospice demonstrated in these last months. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to St. Vincent DePaul or your charity of choice.

Hamilton Mylan is in charge of arrangements. Private funeral to be held.
