M. Sue Amann of Vancouver, WA, passed away on August 17, 2025, at 93 years of age. She was preceded by her husband, Fred Tomlin, in 2001, and her youngest daughter, AnneMarie Tomlin, in 2024. She is survived by her husband, Jim Amann; and children, Jeff Tomlin, Sandra Tomlin, Cathi (Tomlin) Bonney and David Tomlin. She had 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition, three stepdaughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Sue was born in Tulsa, OK. Her family moved to Portland when she was four years old. She attended St. Rose Elementary School and graduated from Holy Child Academy High School in 1950. Sue entered the University of Portland School of Nursing and graduated in 1954. During her high school years, she was very active in Girl Scouts and met her future husband, Fred, who was active in Boy Scouts.
Sue worked as a registered nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland for 16 years. She taught at Mt. Hood Community College and then worked in nursing staff development at Good Samaritan Hospital for 20 years. She was a career nurse.
Sue was a hardworking Mom, in the 1960s, raising five children and sending them to Catholic elementary and high schools. She was very active in supporting her children's activities, always attending sports events, driving team members to games and helping wherever she could. She loved reading, sitting in the sun and traveling with Fred.
Sue married Jim Amann in 2005. They also loved to travel, cruising to Alaska and visiting Europe and Mexico as well as family in North Dakota. Seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy.
Funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vancouver, WA, on Friday, September 12. Rosary will start at 10 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in parish hall after Mass.
