MARY ANN SCHOLTEN
March 19, 1944 ˜ July 14, 2021
In Vancouver, Mary Ann Scholten passed away peacefully in the early morning of July 14, 2021, with her husband by her side. Mary Ann was born March 19, 1944, in Vancouver, WA, at the Kaiser Shipyard Hospital where she was adopted at birth by her parents Dr. Walter and Lela Dungan.
Mary Ann graduated from Evergreen High School in 1962 where she then went on to attend Clark College for a brief period. Here is where she met her lifelong husband and soulmate, John Scholten. John and Mary Ann were married Sept. 11, 1965 at St. James Catholic Church. They began their journey in Welches, OR, where they lived for a year and a half. During their time there Mary Ann gave birth to their first child, Kimberly Scholten May 14, 1966. On March 19, 1968, Mary Ann's 24th birthday, she gave birth to her second child Christopher Scholten. Over the first four years of marriage they moved several times before moving back to Mary Ann's roots in Vancouver, where she wanted stay to raise their new family. When her kids became of school age, Mary Ann began her career as a preschool teacher at Ladybug Preschool in Vancouver. She taught there for eight years.
Mary Ann lived an active and adventure filled life. She played on a woman's soccer league, became a member of the Vancouver Bike Club and participated in races regularly. In her late 60's, Mary Ann and a group of friends rode their bikes across Ireland. She was also an avid runner, running multiple marathons/triathlons a year including Hood to Coast and Portland Marathon. Mary Ann enjoyed being outside always, especially in her garden with her hands in the dirt or kayaking with her husband. She loved cats and was great at being crafty, she loved making homemade cards. She was an amazing cook, but absolutely hated it. She loved music of all kinds, especially Janis Joplin.
Above all else, her greatest joy in life was being a grandma to her three granddaughters whom she spent much time with and played an active role in their upbringing. Mary Ann was a devoted wife, mother, grandma, and friend. She loved deeply and that was known by all who knew her. The definition of grace, strength and class, she was a role model to many without even trying. She has crossed her last finish line and will be missed dearly.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, John Scholten; her children, Kimberly (Anna) Scholten and Christopher (Heidi) Scholten; three granddaughters, Shelby (Derek) Morgan, Alyse (Justin) Smalley, and Olivia Scholten; two great grandchildren, Landen and Lela-Ann; cousins, Mike (Diane) Matthews, Renee Smith, Val Matthews, and Rose Markum; as well as the many friends she has made in her life.
There will be no service per her request. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society or to Peacehealth Hospice Care.
