Obituary

Nancy passed away in the early hours of August 16 surrounded by her loving family after a three-year battle with brain cancer. She is survived by her three children, Elizabeth, Katherine and William; her sisters, Susan Coddington and Sally Townend; her husband of 37 years, Phil; and many longstanding, loyal and caring friends. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Virginia Townend.

Nancy was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Following her graduation from Whitman College, Nancy spent 18 years working as a paralegal. With her growing family, Nancy reduced her working hours until her son's birth when she retired to raise her children full time. Family was the center of Nancy's life. She also made friends wherever she went and cherished these friendships her entire life.

Nancy was a dedicated volunteer, committing her time and talents to many charitable causes including the Junior League of Portland, Kids on the Block Awareness Program, Clark County Food Bank, shelters for the unhoused, the Vancouver schools, and her church where she taught Sunday school for many years. In 2002, she was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Junior League of Portland and received the Golden Acorn Award in 2017 for her volunteer service to the Vancouver Public Schools.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 1 p.m. on September 14, 2024, at the Vancouver First United Methodist Church, located at 401 E 33rd St., Vancouver, WA. In lieu of flowers and cards, the family suggests donations be made in Nancy's name to organizations supporting the food insecure, the unhoused and at-risk children.
