Obituary

P. Clarence Ames of Vancouver passed away on August 26, 2024, at the age of 95 in Vancouver, WA.

He was born February 25, 1929, at Northport, WA. Into the loving family of Walter and Elfreida Ames. He grew up in Northport, WA, with five siblings where he enjoyed a very happy childhood in the small town located on the East bank of the Columbia River near the Canadian border.

After graduating from Northport high school, he attended Washington State University getting a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked for three years with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio, then served two years in the Army. After his Army duty, mostly at Ft. Devens, MA, he worked for Alcoa for 34 years. Work locations included Akron, OH, Wenatchee, WA, Geelong, Australia, Henderson, KY, Massena, NY, Vancouver, WA and Sao Luis, Brasil.

In all of his work locations and while growing up, Clarence was always active in outdoor activities. He excelled in high school sports of baseball, basketball and football and enjoyed fishing the many streams near his hometown of Northport.

At work locations of his adult life, he coached little league baseball, took his family and friends on overnight mountain hiking trips, got himself and family involved in snow skiing and tennis. In all his years in Vancouver he had been a member of the Lake Shore Athletic Club where he regularly played tennis and used the workout facilities. He very much enjoyed bridge, travel that included elder hostels and cruises and reading. When given the chance, he always enjoyed talking to others about his two grandsons that had been drafted into the baseball world as pitchers.

Religion was always a part of his life. Growing up he served as an altar boy even through his high school years. It was at the Newman Club at college where he met his wife (now deceased), Mary Lou, that resulted in 57 years of wonderful marriage and life. Mr. Ames was active at St. John's Catholic Church where he served as a lector, on the pastoral council, member of Adult Activities group, two fund drives, the Knights of Columbus, helped with coffee and donuts after Mass and various church functions.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Ames, and his wife, Mary Lou.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda, and one son, David, both of Vancouver: grandchildren and great grandchildren.
