Ray Dario Ayala, 86, died at his home in Vancouver, Washington on October 4, 2025. He was born July 22,1939 in Horse Springs, New Mexico.

Ray is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Melinda Ayala, Anna-Marie Stateler (Tim Zuercher), and Lisa McCaskey (Steve); his son, Tony Ayala (Kenalyn); his grandchildren, Riley and Breyden Ford, Michael, Emily, and Brooke Stateler, Alex and Cody McCaskey, and Xavier and Imani Ayala; as well as many other family members and friends, including compadres Alfredo and Lydia Aragon, and his loving caregiver, Nellie Micu.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Chavez Ayala; his brothers, Philip and Benny Ayala; his sister, Eva Montoya Ayala; and his infant grandson, Nicholas Stateler.

Ray was raised in Socorro, New Mexico. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Army and went on to complete both his undergraduate and graduate studies. In 1969, he married Linda, and they made their home together in Vancouver for 56 years.

He spent his career working at the Washington State School for the Deaf in Vancouver for 26 years as a teacher, counselor, student life director, high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. His dedication as an educator in the deaf community left a lasting impact on staff, students, and families.

Ray always put the Lord first in his life, prayed daily, and tithed monthly to his church and charity. Ray was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for 53 years where he served actively as an usher, greeter, and a committed member of the Knights of Columbus, holding leadership roles including Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, and District Deputy.

Ray's family was the center of his life. He budgeted wisely, setting aside funds for his children's and grandchildren's education as a priority. His family made special memories with Dad/Grandpa/Uncle Ray, while he and his wife Linda enjoyed many travels in retirement.

Ray was a talker and was happiest when engaging with others. He was a friend to all and treated everyone from judges to janitors with respect and dignity.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 27th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S. Andresen Road, Vancouver, WA. A reception will follow in Marian Hall at St. Joseph.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, St. Vincent de Paul, or American Legion Charities.
