Obituary

With hearts filled with both sorrow and gratitude, we announce the passing of Catherine, who entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the age of 99.

Born September 23, 1927, in Texarkana, Arkansas, Catherine lived a life marked by faith, love, service to her Christian beliefs, and devotion to family. A faithful member of Granada Southern Baptist Church in Livermore, California, she found strength and comfort in the promises of God and His Word.

Catherine was the beloved wife of Refford "Buck" Fletcher (1924-2002); daughter of Arthrum (1902-1975) and Altha (1902-1958) Westmoreland; sister to Thomas (1921-1976), Evelyn Vasquez/Brewer/Hunner (1925-1985), Virginia Ashby (1931-2017), and Barbara Green (1932-2008); mother to Wilma Scott (1948- ) and Karen Mack (1953 - ); grandmother to Breelyn Young (1972 - ) and Eugene Scott (1976 - ); and great-grandmother to Benny (2014 - ). Catherine is also survived by sons-in-law Patrick Scott, and John (Jay) Mack, and many nieces and nephews.

Catherine graduated high school and began college in Business. She soon married and left school to raise and care for her family. Once her children had flown the nest, Catherine and Buck spent many years traveling the world. When home, Catherine taught Sunday school and was active in other church activities.

At the age of 70, Catherine was presented with the opportunity to go back to school and get a college degree. She attended Liberty University Bible School and graduated, with honors, at the age of 75, with an associate's degree in theology. She was able to pursue her lifelong dream of being a missionary. Although her health prevented her from going to Romania, she was later able to go to Hungary, teaching teens and young adults English and the Bible.

In her early 80s, Catherine, who had neither smoked nor drank alcohol and was in great shape, decided to walk the San Francisco Bay to Breakers run with daughter Karen and her husband Jay. She walked alongside thousands of participants dressed in outlandish costumes, ballerina tutus, and naked men. “They haven’t got anything I haven’t seen,” she announced to those around her.

In her early 90s Catherine began to show signs of Alzheimer’s disease. She had to give up driving and leave her home of 20-plus years in Livermore, California. The move to her daughter’s home in Vancouver, Washington was traumatic. During the years Catherine lived with Wilma and her husband Pat, she was able to make new friends, do some travel, quilt with her daughters and nieces, and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchild. In 2022, Catherine entered a quilt in Quilt fest Northwest, the 47th annual Clark County Guild quilt show. She won the Bev Herring Memorial Award for her quilt, “The Flowers and Birds of America.”

When the time came for additional care, Catherine went with her daughters to look at memory care facilities and chose Iris Adult Family Home. Catherine moved in on Easter Sunday, 2026. She looked forward to her 99th birthday in September and was surprised with a party of friends and family, two cakes and three different flavors of ice cream, and presents. Only a few weeks after her party, Catherine succumbed to renal failure. She passed peacefully at Ray Hickey Hospice House, surrounded by family and friends.

Though our hearts mourn Catherine’s departure, we take comfort that she belongs to Christ and has the promise of eternal life. We give thanks to God for the blessing of Catherine's life and the love she shared with all who knew her.

A closed casket visitation will be held at Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home, 302 W 11th Street, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on November 7, 2026. There will be a visitor sign-in book and basket for cards. We hope those of you that knew Catherine during her time in Vancouver, will pay your final respects at this time.

After the visitation Catherine will get to travel one last time. She will be transported to Seaside, California to be interred with her beloved Westmoreland family in the Garden of Prayer section of Mission Memorial Park (831) 200-8890. After a graveside service (date and time to be determined), she will be put to rest between her mother and brother.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

May the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, comfort all who mourn, and may Catherine rest in the eternal love and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
